During the past 20 years, aquaculture industry has been growing tremendously, especially that of marine fish, shrimps and bivalves. But, as with many other industries, this rapid growth has brought with it the problem of environmental pollution. Contamination of coastal waters due to aquaculture is posing serious concerns among law makers as well as scientists. The coastal environment has been seriously damaged, often resulting in disease outbreaks. Recently, shrimp culture all over the world has been frequently affected by viral and bacterial diseases inflicting huge loss. In China, the production of shrimps decreased seriously. The production of shrimps was 200,000 tons in 1992, but was only 55,000 tons in 1994. Pathogenic microorganisms implicated in these outbreaks were viruses, bacteria, rickettsia, mycoplasma, algae, fungi and protozoan parasites. For preventing and controlling diseases, a host of antibiotics, pesticides and other chemicals were used possibly creating antibiotic resistant bacteria, persistence of pesticides and other toxic chemicals in aquatic environment and creating human health hazards. Thus, how to improve the ecological environment of aquaculture has become the focus of attention of international aquaculture.
Now, researchers are trying to use probiotic bacteria in aquaculture to improve water quality by balancing bacterial population in water and reducing pathogenic bacterial load. Researchers are increasingly paying more attention to this new approach (ecological aquaculture ), and have made considerable headway. This review, on the basis of the new research findings in probiotics applied to aquaculture, analyze and summarize the mechanism of probiotic action in aquaculture.

Some shrimp farmers have reported a degree of success in limiting the pathogenic strains of Vibrio spp. by using molasses instead of table sugar (sucrose) in their feed., as a means of boosting the carbon to nitrogen nutrient balance, so that the heterotrophic bacteria population increases in the pond, digesting a higher proportion of excess ammonia. Although there is some disagreement in the industry, most environmental engineers notice optimum bacterial utilization of organic carbon pollution, when the nutrient balance matches C= 100, N = 6, and P = 1.2, with a ratio of C:N = 17:1 :and N:P = 5. Shrimp farmers can then manipulate the selective utilization of specific nutrients in a pond by altering the nutrient ratio. For example, when ammonia levels are high, addition of an easily digested carbon source, like molasses, to produce a ratio of C:N = 12 will force the heterotrophic cultures to utilize a higher level of ammonia, present in pond water, to balance the molasses, since molasses is easier to digest than the organic carbon pollutants naturally present (feces, leftover feed, petroleum and fertilizer runoff). Environmental engineers and Alken-Murray have noticed that when heterotrophic bacteria digest petroleum hydrocarbons, they require and utilize a higher level of ammonia-nitrogen than for digestion of simple carbohydrates, sewage, etc. The ideal balance for petroleum remediation is C=100,N=10, P= 2, so although the N:P ratio remains 5:1, the C:N ratio changes from 17:1 to 10:1.

In the present study white gut disease observed in L. vannamei shrimp farms from Tamilnadu and Andrapradesh. Vibriosis is one of the major disease problems in shellfish and finfish aquaculture. Vibriosis is a bacterial disease responsible for mortality of cultured shrimp worldwide Vibrio species are widely distributed in culture facilities throughout the world. Vibrio-related infections frequently occur in hatcheries, but epizootics also commonly occur in pond reared shrimp species. Vibriosis is caused by gram-negative bacteria in the family Vibrionaceae. Outbreaks may occur when environmental factors trigger the rapid multiplication of bacteria already tolerated at low levels within shrimp blood, or by bacterial penetration of host barriers. The exoskeleton provides an effective physical barrier to pathogens trying to penetrate the external surface of crustaceans, as well as the foregut and hindgut.
The occurrence of five types of diseases: tail necrosis, shell disease, red disease, loose shell syndrome (LSS) and white gut disease (WGD) is by Vibrio spp. in P. monodon from culture ponds of coastal Andhra Pradesh (Jayasree et al., 2006). Among these, LSS, WGD, and red disease caused mass mortalities in shrimp culture ponds. Six species of Vibrio—V. harveyi, V. parahaemolyticus, V. alginolyticus, V. anguillarum, V. vulnificus and V. splendidus—are associated with the diseased shrimp. The distribution and species composition of luminous bacteria in commercial penaeid shrimp hatcheries were studied by Jawahar Abraham and Palaniappan (2004). Theobservation on the presence of V. harveyi (97.30%) and V. orientalis (2.70%) in shrimp gut contents evinced that the primary source of these bacteria in a shrimp hatchery was the faecal matter from brood stock, possibly at the time of spawning. Mortalities due to vibriosis occur when shrimps are stressed by factors such as: poor water quality, crowding, high water temperature, low DO and low water exchange
If the farmers stock health disease free seed and maintain good water quality and provide nutritious feed to get higher survival.
White Gut Disease
This disease was observed in culture ponds of Rambilli area (Visakhapatnam district) during summer of 2000–2001. The diseased shrimp showed symptoms of stunted growth and opaqe white gut visible through the transparent cuticle as a white streak. The shrimp consumed feed in large quantities and released fecal matter in the form of a white fluid material. Mortality rate in affected ponds was approximately 80%.Twenty individuals in acute phase of infection and in moribund state were collected and subjected to bacteriological analysis. The total Vib-rio loads in hemolymph were very high with an average of 0.2 x 10 to the power 5cfu/mL and three Vibrio spp.,V. harveyi, V. alginolyticusndV. anguil-larum, were identified
